  6.     THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS. A piano duo, stranded between
  7. anonymity and unemployment, needs a sexy vocalist to spruce up
  8. the act. Good career move; bad for the boys. Jeff and Beau
  9. Bridges and Michelle Pfeiffer are better than fabulous in this
  10. wry, rare comedy of character.

  12.     CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS. In Woody Allen's acute meditation
  13. on the Greed decade, bad men are rewarded for their crimes and
  14. nice guys worry about committing misdemeanors. This is Allen in
  15. his funny-serious mood, farcical and dour by turns, a showman
  16. of gentle misanthropy.

  18.     FIGHT FOR US. A saintly priest is gunned down and
  19. mutilated. A basketball team is massacred. A female rebel is
  20. raped by a vigilante commandant; when the commandant is killed,
  21. his lieutenant carves open the dead man's chest and eats his
  22. flesh. These horrifying events might seem the stuff of slasher
  23. movies, but according to Filipino director Lino Brocka, they are
  24. real. His film, based in part on testimony collected by Amnesty
  25. International, charges that human rights violations are more
  26. widespread under President Corazon Aquino than they were during
  27. the Marcos regime, which Brocka had long criticized. Fight for
  28. Us is a cry for justice, from a man out of breath, for a nation
  29. nearly eviscerated by fratricide.

  31.     FESTIVALS

  33.     WURSTFEST. You can link up with more than 100,000 sausage
  34. devotees at this Texas-size eaterama. For ten days, New
  35. Braunfels, Texas, rolls out the best of the wurst, as well as
  36. yodelers, dancers and polka players with down-home names like
  37. Oma and the Oom pahs. Nov. 3 through 12.

  39.     THEATER

  41.     BROTHERS AND SISTERS. The most acclaimed Soviet stage work
  42. since World War II, this two-part epic from Leningrad depicts
  43. Stalin's abuse of the rural millions. In Russian, with
  44. simultaneous translation through earphones, at San Diego's Old
  45. Globe.

  47.     OH, KAY! Connecticut's Goodspeed Opera House engagingly
  48. shifts vintage Gershwin to 1920s Harlem. Tony winner Ron
  49. Richardson (Big River) stars.

  51.     TELEVISION

  53.     CHICO MENDES: VOICE OF THE AMAZON (TBS, Nov. 1, 10:05 p.m.
  54. EST). This one-hour documentary focuses on the martyred
  55. Brazilian's efforts to save the Amazonian rain forest and
  56. includes the last television interview Mendes gave before his
  57. 1988 assassination.

  59.     OUR TOWN (PBS, Nov. 3, 9 p.m. on most stations). Last
  60. season's acclaimed Broadway revival of the Thornton Wilder
  61. classic is presented on Great Performances.
  62.  
  63.     CROSS OF FIRE (NBC, Nov. 5 and 6, 9 p.m. EST). Romance,
  64. murder and revenge -- you'll get it all in this fact-based
  65. mini-series about the rise and fall of a Grand Dragon of the Ku
  66. Klux Klan in 1920s Indi anapolis. Starring John Heard (Beaches,
  67. Big) and Mel Harris (thirtysomething).

  69.     MUSIC KATE BUSH: THE SENSUAL WORLD (Columbia). Well, it
  70. does have a lonely-hearts love song about a computer. Otherwise,
  71. the histrionics are so heavy and the passion so sham on this
  72. record that it would be wiser just to press DELETE.

  74.     THE RCA VICTOR VOCAL SERIES. Maybe they weren't better in
  75. the old days, but these digitally remastered recordings make a
  76. strong case that the jet plane and overbooked schedules are
  77. enemies of vocal grace. The first issues in this new project
  78. include Marian Anderson, Leonard Warren, Rosa Ponselle, Tito
  79. Schipa and Jussi Bjoerling. The Warren disk is an oddity,
  80. recorded live on a 1958 tour of the Soviet Union, where the
  81. baritone's dark, sexy voice knocked'em dead. Ponselle's sublime
  82. vocal poise lights great Verdi arias and ditties like When I
  83. Have Sung My Songs to You, I'll Sing No More. Easily the most
  84. joyous singer is Schipa, with his diaphanous tenor tones and
  85. fluent ornamentation. There was a real nap on the operatic
  86. velvet back then!

  88.     BOOKS

  90.     THE REMAINS OF THE DAY by Kazuo Ishiguro (Knopf; $18.95).
  91. It is 1956, and an aging English butler looks back on his
  92. decades of service in a stately house. The meaning of his
  93. memories is not always clear to him, but it is to the reader,
  94. thanks to Japanese-born novelist Ishiguro's deadly, deadpan
  95. dissection of the British class system.

  97.     THE WAY TO COOK by Julia Child (Knopf; $50). The first tome
  98. in nine years from the nation's queen of cuisine is, expectedly,
  99. an instructional masterpiece: precise directions, lavish
  100. illustrations, wise little tips on timing and the proper tools.
  101. The recipes are mostly Euroclassics with variations, many
  102. lightened for health-conscious American palates. A boon for
  103. beginners; a must for the more experienced.

  105.     ROLLING STONE: THE PHOTOGRAPHS (Simon & Schuster; $50).
  106. Nixon's helicopter lifting off after his final farewell, John
  107. curling up naked against Yoko, Brando posing in a wheatfield in
  108. bonnet and dress. If these photos touch a nostalgic nerve,
  109. you'll also love the 147 others, culled from 22 years of Rolling
  110. Stone, where celebrity photojournalism and portraiture mix with
  111. fascinating results.
